A Warm Welcome
Children of the stars (batik collage) Sonjie
Most of the artwork in these galleries is done in BATIK, a method (originally used in Java) of producing colored designs on textiles by dyeing them, having first applied wax to the parts that are to be left undyed. For those who have decorated easter eggs the old-fashioned way, the method involved is the same.
There are different versions of batik found in many cultures throughout the world. In Mali, the popular Mud Cloth (Bogolan) is produced, using mud, instead of wax as a resist. In Nigeria, artisans use rice starch resist and indigo dye to make the patterns on the Adire cloth. Of all resists beeswax is the most durable, and therefore most widely used.
Along with the batiks, these galleries show other media like pen and ink drawings, quilts, embroideries, wearable art items and photographs. Everything is for sale and sizes can be tailored to suit your needs. All you have to do is send an enquiry to sonjitaara@sprint.blackberry.net for a quote. Some of the work is available as original but, in place of originals, we sell archival prints on watercolor paper or on canvas. Dimensions range from 11’‘x14” to 24”x36”.
Thank you for visiting, and please come back, as we will be updating regularly.
Cheers!
